Thesis:
Alarmed by Communism in the Soviet Union, Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy began his quest to root communists out of America. Capitalizing on fears of Totalitarianism, McCarthy obtained an extensive following of Americans in all walks of life who feared Communist influence in the United States. The McCarthy Era was not the first of its kind, rather, marked the second Red Scare in America. Despite Senator McCarthy’s intentions to protect his nation, he ultimately ended up torturing the American people with outlandish accusations with little factual evidence to support his claims. McCarthy’s tendency to act upon a hunch rather than fact, in due time, resulted in his demise along with extensive political and social tumult in America, in a movement commonly referred to as McCarthyism. |
Beginning in 1947 with his election into the United States Senate from the state of Wisconsin, Joseph McCarthy tormented the American people with factless accusations, until his eventual death in 1957.
|
A series of court hearings exposing McCarthy's unjust methods of interrogation compounded with his sudden death resulted in Senator McCarthy's political demise.
|
Despite the brevity of McCarthy's anti-communist movement, McCarthyism has left a lasting legacy on American society over half a century later.
